The "Sara J" was built over a period of twenty years. The builders, George and Ruth Shapka, built her to the best of their abilities, constantly monitoring humidity and temperature. She is cold-moulded, a method of construction that combines epoxy and wood. She is strong, safe, and for those who know the way of a ship, she will go anywhere.
When you're sitting at the helm and looking forward to the pulpit, the feel of the absolute power in the wind as she storms through seas, fifteen thousand pounds of sheer delight, dancing, you will know that the desire to sail is one of youth. The tapered stanchions and mast reduce drag, so she will want to sail, she will want to head upwind, so use the autohelm, use the windvane, use all the sail devices on board to keep her safe, not over powered, nor under powered. She is a big boat, but you must never force anything on her. If something does not want to go, have patience, for there is a reason, look up, look port, look starboard and find the problem.
As you step down into the cabin, the galley is on the starboard, the navigation station is on the port, ahead of this bulkhead is the main saloon (seating for six adults), another bulkhead, then the head/shower on the port and storage/pantry starboard before you climb into the ample double berth up front.
Outside, on the coach roof, you'll notice the heftiness of the handrails. Manufactured boats aren't built like "Sara J". Her hand rails topside are three or four times the thickness of her manufactured contemporaries.
The desire to sail, like the desire to build a boat, is the desire of youth, unwilling yet to accept the idea of a final resting place . . . it begins on a serene horizon. It ends by covering the whole sky, so that you can think of nothing else. You must sail or build to regain your freedom. Frank Mottl
